SPI (Safety Performance Indicator) Multipliers

SPI (Safety Performance Indicator) Multipliers

Multiplier Option for SPI Measurement

The multiplier option is available when creating a Submission Answer (SPI) measured by a rate, with the rate information (e.g., total monthly flight hours, monthly labor hours, etc.) filled in using the Operational Logs feature. It helps transform awkwardly small or large rate values into more industry-aligned, readable figures.

How It Works:

When measuring an SPI by rate (e.g., unstable approaches per flight hour), the multiplier allows you to adjust the result into a value that’s easier to work with. For example:

  • If your organization measures unstable approaches per flight hour, and you fly 100 hours with 1 unstable approach, the initial result is 0.01 unstable approaches per flight hour.

  • To make this value more manageable (and industry-standard), you can apply a multiplier, such as 100, which converts the value into 1 unstable approach per 100 flight hours. This is easier to graph, communicate, and set reference values for.

Example Calculation:

  • Initial value: 0.01 unstable approach per flight hour
  • Multiplier applied: 100 (hours)
  • Result: 1 unstable approach per 100 flight hours

Key Details:

  • Multiplier Values: Common multipliers are multiples of 10 (e.g., 10, 100, 1000), but the exact multiplier chosen depends on the organization’s needs.
  • Graphing & Communication: The multiplier makes the SPI rate values easier to understand, graph, and reference.

This feature simplifies the process of setting, analyzing, and reporting rate-based SPIs while maintaining alignment with industry standards.
